Scaling and Root Planing in Argüelles, Madrid

Scaling and root planing is the first-line treatment for periodontitis. A deep clean below the gums that removes the bacteria causing periodontal disease.

What is scaling and root planing?

Scaling and root planing (also known as curettage) is the most effective conservative periodontal treatment for periodontitis. It involves removing bacterial plaque, tartar and bacterial toxins from the root surfaces of the teeth, below the gum line.

Why is it necessary?

In periodontal disease, bacteria colonise the space between the tooth and the gum (the periodontal pocket). These bacteria and their toxins progressively destroy the bone and the tissue that supports the tooth. Scaling and root planing interrupts this process.

The procedure

  1. Local anaesthetic of the area to be treated to ensure comfort.
  2. Subgingival scaling: Removal of tartar and plaque from the root surfaces with curettes and ultrasonic instruments.
  3. Root planing: Smoothing of the root surfaces to make it harder for bacteria to reattach.
  4. Antiseptic irrigation: Disinfection of the periodontal pockets.

Treatment is generally divided into quadrants, treating one or two quadrants per session.

Results and follow-up

After treatment, the gums recover a healthier appearance, bleeding is reduced and the depth of the pockets decreases. In the following weeks a periodontal re-evaluation is carried out to assess the response to treatment.
