Retainers: protecting your orthodontic investment

Once orthodontic treatment is finished, the teeth tend to want to return to their original position. This phenomenon is called orthodontic relapse and is completely preventable with the correct use of retainers.

Types of retainer

Fixed or lingual retainer

A small wire that is bonded to the inner surface of the front teeth. It is permanent and the patient does not have to remember to put it in.

Removable Hawley retainer

The classic retainer with a wire and acrylic. It is worn at night or as directed by the specialist.

Clear retainer (Essix type)

Similar to an Invisalign aligner but with a purely retentive function. It is aesthetic and comfortable.

How long do retainers need to be worn?

The honest answer is: for life, although less frequently as the years go by. The first few months are the most critical.

Care of removable retainers

• Clean them with a brush and cold water (never hot, as they would deform).
• Keep them in their case when not in use.
• Do not wrap them in napkins (they get thrown away by accident).
• Bring them to every check-up so the specialist can verify their fit.
